Executive Coaching Spotlight - Are you diluting your strategic impact?

In my coaching sessions, one prevailing theme is the pursuit of balance. Today’s leaders are often engulfed in a whirlwind of activities, but does busyness equate to progress?

However, I’ve noticed a significant comfort in being busy and taking action instead of stepping back to streamline efforts towards strategic and impactful initiatives.

I recently had a session with a client who had a powerful realisation. He struggled to find balance, lacked a sense of fulfilment, and felt his efforts needed to be acknowledged. As we went through his workload, he saw that everything he was doing felt important. However, he noticed a tendency to prioritise action and the comfort of being busy with work over meaningful impact. It was a fundamental distinction for him to recognise.

When leaders can diagnose which initiatives will have the most significant impact, they often find themselves doing less but achieving more. This approach creates balance and leads to a greater sense of fulfilment.

A lot of the leaders and teams I coach are overwhelmed with work. They feel productive because they are busy, but when we look closer, we see that much of their effort is not at the right level. They end up handling tasks that could be delegated to team members in order to make progress quickly, but this reduces their strategic impact.

💡 This brings us to a critical question: Is your bias for action diluting your strategic impact?

The leaders I coach are all experiencing a similar need for balance. They are pressured by a bias for action, which often undermines their ability to achieve meaningful results. It is essential to pause and consider what you’re working on and how it will drive the strategic change you’re responsible for.

Leadership is about driving impact. Institutions like London Business School echo this concept, emphasising that effective leadership is measured by impact.

💥 What if we were to audit the difference between what’s important and what’s impactful? Important because it needs to be managed or important because it will lead to impactful outcomes?

This reflection could be a game-changer for many leaders striving for balance in their professional lives.

The quest for balance in leadership is an ongoing journey. It requires a shift from merely being busy to focusing on initiatives that drive strategic change and have a lasting impact. By doing so, leaders can achieve true fulfilment and effectiveness in their roles.

As we move into the holiday season, the need to find this strategic balance becomes ever more important, adding another layer of pressure.
