The three building blocks of leadership agility

Demand for leaders who can demonstrate a high level of leadership agility often tops my clients’ executive assessment requirements.

This much-sought-after skill is critical for organisations aiming to develop a flexible, mobile and resilient workforce who can thrive in ambiguity. Those leaders who demonstrate high agility often become those ‘go-to’ leaders trusted with the highest-impact projects.

So how can you enhance your leadership agility?

According to an article in HBR magazine, there are three core blocks of leadership agility.

1: Navigating Newness

An agile leader excels at handling two kinds of novelty: intricate tasks without a predefined approach and scenarios where they lack prior experience. Agile leaders thrive, seizing opportunities and succeeding where others might falter.

How often do you put yourself in situations where you have little or no experience and can offer a beginner’s mindset to a task or project.

2: Understanding others 

Agile leaders excel at understanding and even predicting various perspectives. By empathising with others, they can identify connections, foresee and address potential conflicts, and gain a broader understanding of the situation.

Instead of waiting for alternative viewpoints or being told that something won’t work, agile leaders actively seek out opposing opinions and maintain an open-minded approach to constructive conflict.

3: Self-awareness 

Agile leaders possess a high degree of self-awareness. They recognise their influence and continuously seek ways to improve. They identify the support and confidently reach out for assistance to optimise their performance.

Viewing learning as an ongoing process, agile leaders remain proactively curious about the world, drawing inspiration from diverse individuals and environments.
