The Leadership Advantage: Deciding how to decide
Mar 12, 2025
One of the biggest leadership challenges I’ve seen isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about clarifying how decisions should be made.
Too often, leaders get pulled into every decision, slowing down momentum and preventing teams from moving forward with confidence. On the other hand, some decisions get pushed down without enough direction, creating misalignment and rework.
Nancy Duarte’s recent MIT Sloan article reinforces a truth I’ve come to believe strongly: effective leaders decide about deciding. They create clarity on who decides what, when, and how—ensuring they focus on the highest-impact areas while empowering their teams to act with autonomy.
When leaders get this right, the business impact is immediate:
🔹 Decisions happen faster – No bottlenecks, no unnecessary delays
🔹 Teams feel ownership – Clear decision-making frameworks build confidence and accountability
🔹 Focus stays on what matters – Leaders spend time on the big, strategic moves, not getting stuck in the weeds
This shift is game-changing. If you’re constantly overloaded with decisions, it’s not just about delegation—it’s about defining a smarter decision-making process.
Leadership effectiveness is not just about making decisions—it’s about creating clarity within context, empowering teams, and ensuring focus on the right priorities for maximum business impact.
